Fallout: London launches on April 23, having been in the works for five years. While it could easily pass for an official release, it’s a hugeFallout 4mod project, overhauling the game to create a new area and story entirely, all set in the UK.
Now, the devs are able to think past the Fallout: London mod, and discuss what comes next. Citing the developer behindThe Forgotten City- Modern Storyteller - as inspiration, Fallout: London’s creator says that he hopes the team can make a full game one day, using the skills they picked up as hobbyists to break into the gaming industry.
This comes from a recent interview fromDualShockerswith Fallout: London lead, Dean Carter. Having formed a studio to create the mod, Team FOLON, Carter shares what comes next for the team, now that they’re set to release the ambitious Fallout 4 expansion. As it happens, he wants to follow the steps of The Forgotten City, which started its life as aSkyrimmod.
“They were like, ‘We’ve clearly got something good.’ Then they created themselves as Modern Storyteller, and then they released that game, which did fantastically," says Carter. “They’re the people that I’d like to emulate.”
Carter doesn’t go into more detail than this, other than adding that Team FOLON has “plans for moving onto something in the future”.
Since it’s a mod, you’ll need to have a copy of Fallout 4 on PC to play Fallout: London at launch.
Another Team FOLON dev, Emily Kemp, also comments on their journey from fans to developers. “I’m always amazed by how professional we’ve become,” says Kemp. “I genuinely feel like we are at a professional level now, which is amazing to see how far we’ve come as individuals and as a group.”
The Forgotten City shed itself of its Skyrim origins and found great success as a standalone game. It was met with widely positive reviews and wasour Game of the Year in 2021.Modern Storyteller is working on another game too, so starting as a mod creator forBethesdagames is a genuine avenue into the industry. Team FOLON will already be aware of this, given that some of its developers havealready been poached by Bethesda, including its former lead writer.
We’ll have to see how Fallout: London performs when it launched in April, but right now, it has gone into the new year with a bunch of fans eager to get their hands on it. If it’s a success, we might even see more work from this team in the future, both at Bethesda and elsewhere.
