Choosing A Character
When you are starting a new fighting game, one of the most pressing issues is choosing your fighter. One of the best ways to do this is to…
However, we will also give you a quick breakdown of every character below so that you may get a feel for the characters and their playstyle so you can figure out if they will mesh with you.

Well-Rounded Characters
These characters are good at everything but don’t excel in any one area like the more specialized characters do. However, their versatility does make them very user-friendly.These are typically the best characters to start with.
Gran
★★★★★
He isthe most Ryu-like member of the cast.He comes with a fireball, and an invincible reversal attack, with a lunging attack. Classic shoto stuff.

Jita
Jita is the Ken to Gran’s Ryu.She is a slightly more aggressive version of Gran.
Katalina
Like Gran, Katalinahas a lot of shoto-esquetools. However, she alsohas a number of rangy stabbing attackswith her sword that help her remaineffective in the mid-range.
Percival
★★★☆☆
Of all the all-rounders in the original batch of characters, Percival is the slowest. However, as compensation, he also has the most range.

Zeta
Zeta is a character who can zip in and out of range. She has excellent reach, and a tricky projectile.
Beelzebub
★★★★☆
Beelzebub has an assortment of highly effective ranged attacks he can use to fight at a distance, or he can rushdown with his multi-hitting spinning attacks. He doesn’t play like a shoto, but he has that same level of versatility

Belial
Belial feels like a souped-up shoto, having a lot of the same tools, but his damage potential is also sky-high. He was one of the best characters in the previous version of GBVS, and he still feels quite strong here.
Avatar Belial
Avatar Belial gets a number of extremely powerful tools, such asa projectile attack that hits multiple times, andextremely fast lunging attacks. However, while he is very powerful and quite versatile, he is also more fragile than his non-avatar counterpart.
Grimnr
Grimnr is the most recent Shoto-type character to be added to the cast. He has the core tool set, but alsohas a divekickstyle of attack,as well as the ability to place orbs around the arena that he can dash to, enhancing his mobility.
Siegfried
Joining the cast in Rising, Siegfried has a lot of the same benefits and weaknesses as Percival but cranked up to eleven. He hits very hard, and has incredible range, but his attacks are considerably slower than a Gran or Katalina.
Rushdown-type Characters
The rushdown character exists to get up close, and use their attacks to overwhelm their opponents. They tend to be quite poor at fighting at a distance.
Lancelot
Lancelot is the most pure rushdown character in the game. He is fast, mobile, and able to quickly close the distance on opponents. While he has some ranged attacks as well, he is at his best when he is chasing his opponent down.
Charlotta
Of all the rushdown characters,Charlotta has some of the best attacks for closing distance. She can go from being out of range to being chest to chest in the blink of an eye.Her low jump also makes her aerial approach far better than most other characters.
Soriz
Soriz will struggle the most to get close to the opponent, he will need to depend on his ability to armor through attacks in order to close the distance, but once he is in range,he has an effective toolset for mixing the opponent upand dealing hefty damage. His Skybound Art powers him up considerably, which takes him from being effective to scary.
Narmaya
★★☆☆☆
WhileNarmaya comes equipped with a pretty potent projectile attackof her own, and has an effective ranged fighting stance, she is most effective when rushing down other characters. That being said, she is versatile, and, ideally, you would use both of her stances.

Vira
Vira plays like a more aggressive Katalina. She doesn’t have arealprojectile, butonce she lands her unique attack, she gains access to the ability to perform extremely fast aerial attacksand hard to deal with mobility options.
Seox
Seox is quite similar to Lancelot. He advances on his foes at a breakneck pace and has a multitude of tools to help crack their defense. His unique action is where he stands out, as it is a projectile that he can turn into a teleport at will.
Anila
You could make the argument that Anila is more of an all-rounder, butat her best, Anila is using her sheep-based attacks to skip straight past the neutraland get in your face.
Ranged Fighters
As their name would suggest, ranged fighters are at their best when they are far away from their opponents.
Ferry
Ferry is an extremely potent character when she is far away from her opponent. Her attacks can hit from full screen, and it can be quite difficult to approach her as she has the ability to lock other characters down. However, one wrong move and your opponent will be up close, and you’ll be in trouble.
Metera
Like Ferry, Metera is extremely potent from a distance, and will be able to lock opponents down with her arrows. However, she does have a few tools that are effective in close range as well. This makes her a little bit more well-rounded.
Anre
Anre is able to control the horizontal space unreasonably wellwith his absurdly fast, screen-covering Rakshasa. He has worse tools for dealing with enemies approaching from the air, however.
Eustace
Eustace is the odd-duck among the zoners. While he can fight from full-screen, he is more effective from mid-screen, as then he can make use of his lunging special attack. Still, the name of the game is fighting at a distance, even if he is more comfortable fighting at close-range than some of the other ranged fighters.
Grapplers
These characters possess powerful throw attacks which cannot be blocked. Traditionally, they struggle more at every other range, and struggle to close the distance, but once they do, they are rewardedgreatly.
Ladiva
Ladiva is the Zangief equivalent of Rising. She has relatively poor mobility, and her normals, while notbad, are either a touch slow, or lack range. However, what she gets in exchange is the mighty grab.Once Ladiva gets close enough, she can grab her foe and dish out substantial damage, which is completely unblockable.
Vaseraga
Vaseraga is less of a pure grappler than Ladiva, ashe has a number of effective armored moves,as well as a stance he can use to access a series of unique attacks. But he has multiple command grabs andthe meat and potatoes of his strategy is to get close and use those powerful grappling attacks.
Oddballs
These characters tend to have very specific strategies that don’t neatly fit into one category.
Lowain
Lowain has a number of assist-based attacks. He can call out robots to fire projectiles, or have his bros run in to attack. While this is happening, he can also be moving and attacking. This make Lowainprettytricky to deal with once a player gets accustomed to his playstyle.
Cagliostro
Cag is a trap-based character, which means that her whole gameplan stems around using her Mehen attack to set down magical traps so that she can activate them later. She has the potential to rushdown asher traps can be used to set up some trick mixups.
Zooey
Zooey is keenly focused on maintaining her dragon meter. When she has it, she is able to create ambush scenarios, and pressure extremely effectively. However, she is a deadly incomplete character when she doesn’t have access to her dragon.
Yuel
Yuel is a stance-based character. Her unique action will fundamentally change her attacks. It also makesit so that she is unable to block, but she will immediately counter any non-projectile high attacks. Using her effectively will require switching between these stances frequently.
Nier
Nier is the first true puppet character in the game. She is able to summon Death itself, who can be placed around the battlefield, and activated to attack Nier’s foes. While Death is attacking, Nier will often be able to attack as well, allowing her to team up on her opponents. However, managing two characters at once can be notoriously difficult.
Getting The Most Out Of The Story Mode
If you didn’t play the original game, the Story Mode is, essentially, a Beat ‘em Up mixed with an RPG. However, frustratingly, you can’t choose your favorite character from the beginning. So, if you want to play through the mode with your character of choice, then you will have to work your way through each episode until you unlock the one associated with your favorite character.
Or at least that is how it was in the previous game. However, you’re able to now choose the “complete the story mode” option. What this does is tell the game that you have completed all the content, which will unlock your character of choice!Meaning that you can use the entire cast for the majority of episodes. This is especially useful, as you can play through this mode with a friend, and this way you can have more character variety from the onset.

Though choosing to complete the game will give you access to all the characters, some episodes will still force you to use specific fighters.
Technical? Simple? Why Not Both?
While Street Fighter 6 and Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising both have somewhat similar ways of lowering the skill-barrier for new players, there is one way in which they differ greatly: in Rising you have access to both control schemes at all times. And here’s the thing, both do have benefits.Specials input using the traditional Technical Commands do ten percent more damage.Which means that in a highly contested match, if one player is only using the Simple Commands, and the other is using Technical Commands, the player using the Technical Commandswillwin.
That being said, Technical commands are not always the best way to approach every situation. Pressing a single button alongside a direction will always be faster, meaning it will always be easier to react to attacks by using the Simple input version. So, for your invincible reversal attacks, you are probably better off using the Simple Commands.Especially on wakeup, where timing can be a touch tighter.

By using a combination of Simple and Technical inputs you will get the best of both worlds, which will inevitably yield the best results!
Learning How To Beat Any Character In The Game
So, you’ve jumped into a few matches, and you tangled with some players, but maybe you are getting your clock cleaned by a specific fighter, and you have no idea what the hell you are supposed to do to beat their attacks. Well, my friend, it is time to hit the training mode.
The first thing you want to do is think about the attack that was causing you the most issues. Now,head into the training mode and select “Situational Training”. Select the “Match-Up Training” taband see if there is a trial for learning how to deal with the attack that is giving you issues. There are trials here for each character’s best attacks.

If the attack that is giving you trouble isn’t there, look at “The Basics” tab. Here you’re able to receive tutorials that are more general, but will help teach you to deal with broad types of attacks.
You may want to spend a little time familiarizing yourself with Gran using the above tips. Since he is the only character that the free version of the game will always have available, he is the character you are going to face more often than any other.

Get Acquainted With The Block Button
One of the very interesting quirks of the Granblue fighting games is that, like most 2D fighters, you hold back to defend. However, there is also a block button available. While holding down the block button may not be as intuitive as simply pressing back, it does allow for some pretty unique benefits. For starters, while holding the block button, you will always block the correct direction. This means that it will always nullify cross-ups.
Additionally, whileholding the block button, pressing forward will perform an invincible dash forward, and pressing back will perform a quick dodge. If you start working these dodges into your game you will be able to open up your opponent to big damage.
You will need to get used to using the dodge button for when you start fighting against Lowain as his Skybound Art will require that you dodge some pretty tricky attacks.
