Super Mario RPGfeatures a classically inspired battle system most players love. It has all the best stuff: different attack types, elemental attacks, healing effects and more. Mix these with five well-designed characters and plenty of useful items, and you have all the components needed to have a good time.

But with the good must also come the bad. Fights would be boring if there wasn’t a way to lose, after all. Taking damage is one obvious bad, but another and often equally frustrating obstacle is the use of status effects. Read through this guide to learn what the status effects are and what they do.

Regular Status Effects, Explained

There arefive main status effectsin Super Mario RPG:

Each of them affects Mario and his friends in unique and troublesome ways. Fortunately, there are simple methods to cure most of these conditions.

You can prevent a character from being affected by these effects at all by wearing certain gear, such as theSafety Badge, Antidote Pin and Fearless Pin.

Poison

Your characterloses HPduring each of your turns.

Use a Cleansing Juice item, or wait a few turns for the effect to wear off on its own.

Silence

Your character cannot use theirspecial moves.

Fear

Your character’s regular Attack and Defense and Magic Attack and Magic Defense are allreduced by half.

Sleep

Your character will be immobilized andunable to take any action.

Use a Cleansing Juice item, or wait a few turns for the effect to wear off on its own. Your character will also wake up ifan enemy attacks them.

Down

Your character will faint after theirHP drops to zeroand will be unable to take any action.

Have another character use aPick Me Upitem on the fallen character, or use Peach’sCome Backspecial move.

Transformation Status Effects, Explained

Aside from the five normal status effects, Super Mario RPG also hastwo special transformation effects. When an enemy targets one of your characters with one of these effects, their body will transform into either aScarecrow or a Mushroom.

Similar to regular status effects, you’re able to prevent a character from being affected by these effects at all by wearing certain gear, such as theTrueform Pin or the Safety Badge.

Treatment

Scarecrow

Your character is transformed into a scarecrow and becomes unable to useitems or regular attacks.

Mushroom

Your character is transformed into a mushroom and isunable to act. They will automatically regain health each turn.
