Much has been made over Todd Howard’s pre-launch claim thatStarfieldwould feature “over a thousand planets.” Skeptics were immediately alarmed; how can any game support so many of them without feeling like copy-and-pasted content galore? Others were intrigued; even if some planets feel samey, the vistas and attention to detail should prove fabulous.

We will leave you to your own thoughts on how well this experiment has worked, except to say that Starfield might have done well to reduce its colossal scope somewhat. Regardless, a thousand planets is a heck of a selling point, and maybe you really do wish to land on them all. Here is how many you can expect to encounter.

How Many Planets Are In Starfield?

Let’s actually break this down a bit. Full disclosure: we’re usingMapGenie, which isstrikinglywell-maintained for Starfield. If they’re missing anything, we can assure you, they won’t be missing it for long. There are over 1,693 planets in Starfieldif we are to countsimply scanning them, but it’s understandable that players may be more curious about howmany can actually be explored.

Starfield has, at the current best tally, a total of 373 planets for players to land on, which is obviously a far cry from ‘over a thousand’, but there’s further context here. First, there are hundreds of planets youcan’tland on, although we’ll give Bethesda Game Studios the credit here, and assume that’s not what Todd Howard was talking about.

The other approach makes a good deal more sense - we’re guessing it just wasn’t as easy on the tongue for purposes of quick marketing.Starfield has hundreds of moons to land onas well. There are 1,001 moons in all, and while we don’t know the exact figure offhand,we hazard a guess that roughly one in four can be landed on.

That puts our ballpark at about600+ landable worlds. Indeed, you will be landing near ‘abandoned facilities’ too many times, but there’s plenty of handcrafted content out there, too. Some planets and moons have full-fledged settlements, and plenty have side quests.
