Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Libertymay have been released earlier this year, but that doesn’t mean developer CD Projekt Red is finished tinkering with things to make the game the best it can possibly be. One big complaint fans have had for quite a while is the difficulty of the Adam Smasher boss fight, asa lot of people think he goes down too easilyfor a man that’s made of machinery and is one of Night City’s most terrifying individuals.
For a while, fans have pointed to the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as an example of how it should feel fighting Adam Smasher, and CD Projekt Red seems to have agreed with them. In a recent REDstream talking about features coming in the final update,Cyberpunk 2077quest director Paweł Sasko explains that Adam Smasher is getting an Edgerunners-inspired overhaul that will make him feel like “a proper boss”.
While Sasko is a little light on details as he wants players to discover the new changes for themselves, he does reveal that Adam Smasher will now use Sandevistan during the fight, which leaves a glowing trail behind him when he zips around the arena. Sasko explains that the team thought Adam Smasher’s use of the operating system in Edgerunners was “inspiring”, so they worked to give it to Smasher in this new overhaul.
There was this moment when I saw the meme that you guys made with Spongebob, with how Smasher looks like in the anime and how he looks like in the game, so we’ve tried to match them up much more now.
On top of that, Sasko says that Smasher will be a lot more aggressive, chasing you around and giving you very little time to breathe, turning him into the terrifying force of nature that he’s depicted as in Edgerunners. He also acknowledges that fans will still more than likely find busted builds to make Smasher look like a joke (yes, he’s seen the dildo builds), but that the team has been working hard and taking fan feedback into consideration to improve the fight as much as possible.
If you’re interested in seeing what the Smasher fight looks like now, the stream does also include a little gameplay demonstration, though it’s worth noting that it’s development build footage so it’s indicative of the final product. That being said, the fight does look a lot more hectic now, especially with the added visual effects from the Sandevistan a nice touch on the whole. Definitely a guy you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alleyway at the very least.
