Sorcerers are one of the best spell casters inBaldur’s Gate 3. Even though they don’t have the flexibility of wizards when it comes to the spells they can use, they more than make up for it with tools such as metamagic and sorcery points.

Sorcery points and the flexibility that they bring make sorcerersone of the best multiclass optionsfor classes such as paladin and warlock. Metamagic allows sorcerers to tailor and enhance their spells to fit different situations best. Knowing the uses and power of each metamagic will help you get the best out of your sorcerer character.

Sorcerer’s Level up screen with the careful spell metamagic option

Level 2 Sorcerer

Effect

Allies automatically succeed against your spells that require a saving throw.

Careful spell is a metamagic option that is best suited for beginners. If you catch your allies in your area of effect spells, you can reduce the damage they take and prevent them from suffering any secondary effect that the spell might have.

Sorcerer’s level up screen with the subtle spell metamagic option

While this is a useful ability, once you are used to the movement and positioning strategies of combat in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s hard to justify the sorcery point cost of using careful spell. But it can still come in handy for more experienced players in fights where you haveNPC allies that you cannot control, such as the Harpers in the Moonrise Tower or the Gondians in the Steel Watch Foundry.

Level 3 sorcerer

Sorcerer’s level up screen with the extended spell metamagic option

You can cast the spell while you are silenced.

While subtle spell is one of the best metamagic options in D&D, its implementation in Baldur’s Gate 3 reduces some of its usefulness. In D&D, the most common use for subtle spell is to prevent enemy spell casters from countering your spells, but in Baldur’s Gate 3, enemies can counter your spell even if you use this metamagic.

You might still find this metamagic option useful in certain situations, such as the library in the Gauntlet of Shar, or against enemies who often cast silence. You can even utilize your access to this metamagic by casting silence yourself and controlling the battlefield with your melee characters to disable enemy casters, while being able to cast spells yourself.

Sorcerer’s level up screen with the distant spell metamagic option

One sorcery point per spell.

Prerequisite

Level 2 sorcerer, spells that summon, create a surface, or apply a condition.

Doubles the duration of the effect created by the spell.

Certain spells in the game, such as polymorph or banishment, have shorter duration compared to their original version in D&D. While the shorter duration of these spells is still enough to last a typical fight, you may double their duration by using the extended spell metamagic.

This metamagic is specifically useful in fights where there are one or two strong enemies and dozens of weaker minions. If the minions are not clumped together to be taken out with AoE spells, dealing with them while the stronger enemies have free rein over the battlefield can be extremely difficult. Making spells likeBanishmentor polymorph lasting longer during such fights can make the encounter much easier.

Sorcerer’s level up screen with the heightened spell metamagic option

Level 2 sorcerer

Increase the range of your spell by 50 percent. Melee spells get a range of nine meters.

Sorcerer’s level up screen with the twinned spell metamagic option

The large battlefields and lengthy fights in Baldur’s Gate 3 make the limitations of range and movement speed undoubtedly clear. Having to dash to get in range of your enemies feels like a waste of your turn, so distant spell metamagic might give you the extra push needed to land your spells.

This is even more valuable if you are playing as one of the smaller races that have slower movement speed. In addition, distant spell removes the risk associated with powerful melee spells by giving them a short range, allowing you to cast them without needing to be in the melee range of your opponents.

Sorcerer’s level up screen with the quickened spell metamagic option

Level 3 sorcerer, spells that require a saving throw.

Targets of the spell have disadvantage on their first saving throw against the spell.

Some of the most powerful spells in the game require the enemies to make a saving throw, giving them a chance to resist the damage or effects of your spell. This makes the late game more difficult since the enemies have high modifiers for their saving throws.

Advantage and disadvantage are one of the best ways to change the outcome of a roll in your favor, and the heightened spell metamagic is one of the few ways that let you impose disadvantage on your opponent’s saving throws.

2Twinned Spell

Cost

One sorcery point per spell level. Cantrips cost one sorcery point.

Allows you to target an additional creature.

As the name suggests, the twinned spell metamagic allows you to target two creatures instead of one when casting a spell, and it works both for offensive and support spells. Typically, when you want to affect more targets with a spell, you have to cast it at a higher level, but with this metamagic, you may save your higher-level spell slots.

Many spells benefit from this metamagic, and having them affect two creatures can be a huge advantage in combat. While you might want to use twinned spell solely for offensive spells, don’t underestimate the power of certain support spells such as enlarge or haste on two of your allies.

The spell can be cast as a bonus action.

One of the largest changes to the D&D 5e rules in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the ability to cast more than one spell in your turn. This change made effects such as haste, which were primarily a benefit for martial classes, also work well on spell casters. It also made the popular quickened spell metamagic even more powerful than it was in D&D.

Action economy is your most powerful ally in the game. Being able to cast multiple spells in one round can turn the tides of a battle, and with how accessible long rests are in Baldur’s Gate 3, you should utilize this metamagic option as often as you can. Quickened spell is so good that takingthree levels in rogue to take the extra bonus action as the thief subclass is a viable optionin the late game.
