Baldur’s Gate 3’sJapanese releaseis getting rid of some of Faerûn’s best pastimes - excessive bonking and excessive violence. When theRPGhits the region on December 21, it will remove the ability to enable nudity, and will seemingly censor the sex scenes even further.
To comply with Japanese regulations, the release will also get rid of an interaction in the goblin camp that lets you torture a prisoner. There’s no mention of other violent scenes being removed, however, so it’s not clear if some of the more shocking scenes in The Dark Urge path have also been affected.
As spotted byIGN, Baldur’s Gate 3’s Japanese publisher, Spike Chunsoft, hasoutlinedthe changes made to secure a release in the region. This includes removing the ability to show genitals and enable nudity during romance scenes. However, it’s also said that the option to “view sex scenes” has been removed too, so the sex scenes themselves may have been trimmed down too, as opposed to just being edited to cover up the naughty bits. After all, even if everyone is in their underwear, it’s not hard to figure out what’s going on there.
You can turn off nudity in the current release of Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want a more safe for work experience. That won’t change the animations in the sex scenes themselves though, at least in my experience, so get ready for a lot of dry humping.
What is particularly interesting, however, is the violence that’s been removed from the Japanese release of Baldur’s Gate 3. According to Spike Chunsoft, the only change here is thatLarianhas “removed [the] option for players to torture NPCs in Goblin Camp.” Slight spoiler warning, but it gets much, muchnastier than that, in my opinion, so long as you choose to play as The Dark Urge. I’m so sorry, Alfira.
At the very least, Japanese fans will finally get the chance to play the game in the Japanese language. It’s even getting a physical release in the region, something we’re yet to see in the West.Larian has teased a physical run worldwide though, so its digital exclusivity might come to an end soon.
In any case, December will be a huge month for Baldur’s Gate 3. Not only will it launch in Japan, but it’s also rumoured to befinally coming to Xbox on December 6. This is yet to be confirmed, butLarian has previously pledged to get it onto the platform before the new year, so it’s a likely release window.
