Summary
If you want to play as a customisable character inBaldur’s Gate 3, you have two options - make your own Tav from the ground up, or followThe Dark Urgeorigin. That name alone is probably enough to entice you, so it’s not surprising that many players have already beaten the game as this strange character. However, they’re also finding a key moment towards the end of the run quite underwhelming.
Huge spoilers for The Dark Urge run of Baldur’s Gate 3, obviously.
In Act 3, taking down Orin plays out a little differently if you’re The Dark Urge. While you’re killing her to nab her Netherstone, the God of Murder, Bhaal, is paying close attention. As find out earlier in Act 3, Bhaal is your father, making your fight with Orin a battle between siblings (well, kind of. Orin’s lineage is messy).
If you defeat Orin, Bhaal will declare you his new chosen. But if you’re playing as a good guy, you’ll probably turn him down - something he doesn’t take very kindly to. In response, he kills you, only for Withers to revive youwithoutyour Urge, finally freeing you of Bhaal’s murderous influence.
For your character, it’s an emotional rollercoaster. You’ve just confronted your father, defied his wishes, and been murdered in front of your friends. No one expects you to be brought back. It’s fantastic stuff, and this isn’t what players have an issue with - the problem is that your companions don’t really have anything to say about it.
Reddit user tripthelights shared their disappointment with their companions in this scene, highlighting that not even their love interest, Astarion, had anything to say about them being murdered right in front of him. Others agree that this is an issue, made worse by some pretty blasé reactions when you speak to everyone at camp.
User Va_Dinky also feels that companions should have more responses to other Dark Urge-specific reveals too, like when it’s revealed that you’ve been to Moonrise Towers before, or when you find the person who tortured you before your memory loss.
If you fail to defy your father as The Dark Urge,you could unlock a secret ending for your character in the epilogue. Warning, it’s horrific.
Some also take issue with companions reacting so poorly to finding out that you were the mind behind the Absolute plot, since you may’t remember doing it anyway. In fairness, emotions will probably trump logic in that case - even if you can’t remember doing it, you’re the reason they have worms in their brains.
As someone who just reached this scene in my own playthrough, yeah, it was a little strange that no one had much to say about my murder. That said, there are some lovely responses to be had, like Jaheira beaming with pride that her little Bhaalspawn cub managed to overcome impossible odds.
Larianhas added a bunch of content to the game to pad out areas that some players found lacking, so who knows? Maybe further down the line, we’ll get a Dark Urge-specific update that adds some companion reactions. At the very least, we havethat epilogue camp partyto tie up loose ends, which helps add some more closure to every kind of character.
