Summary
Have you heard the good news? Of course you have.Baldur’s Gate 3forXboxdropped duringThe Game Awards(orjust after),which means my long watch is finally over. After months of complaining about my butt hurting from sitting at my PC for too long, I can finally play my GOTY in bed, cozy and warm under the covers during the rainy December months. Except I can’t, because the game has been deleting save files on Xbox, and updates haven’t been able to fix the issue. The game is finally on Xbox, monthsafter landing on PC and PS5, and I’m too scared of losing progress to even open it.
This has been an issue for several days now, and there still isn’t a concrete fix for it.Xbox Support’s proposed fixis to always keep your Xbox powered on or on standby, make sure the console is fully updated, and close the game completely when not playing it. In replies to the tweet where it offered this advice, multiple players are saying this didn’t work and they still lost hours of gameplay. I’m already in Act 2, intending to reload an older saveso I can save Jaheira, and if I redo the whole Moonrise Towers sequence for the second time only to lose my progress because my saves disappeared, I might cry.
Even worse, in the replies and on Reddit, players are saying that enabling cross-save is causing the game to crash constantly, or not load up at all because it’s gotten stuck while syncing the save files. The only way to stop the crashing is to unlink your Larian account from your Xbox. And, of course, since I’m moving over from PC, I will need to have cross-save enabled, otherwise I won’t be able to access my old save files and start from where I need to. I’m not ready to start an entirely new campaign yet, I still want to see how this one goes.
Others may be brave enough to play the game knowing their progress could get lost for no discernable reason, but I am not. I love this game, but certainly not enough to risk having to do the same levels over and over again because my saves simply aren’t taking. I’m staying away from Baldur’s Gate 3 until I know for sure that all the time I spend trying to keep Jaheira alive, fighting against her apparent death wish, isn’t going to be in vain.I’ll just play Yakuza: Like A Dragon instead, I guess.
But it sucks that I have to do that at all. Mind you, I don’t begrudge Larian a bug here and there. The road to the Xbox version of the game has already been fraught with issues and obviously, the developers are never hoping that they launch a game with bugs that make it impossible for some players to play at all. But I also wonder how this bug wasn’t caught, considering it’s so widespread and tied to a major feature. Should the release have been tied to The Game Awards and not a later date if people would have so much trouble even playing it? I’m just bitter, really. It feels like watching everybody else get candy, having yours finally put in your hand, and then having it snatched away for no reason. I just want to eat my candyand get Karlach to fall in love with me.
