Baldur’s Gate 3is one of the most popular games onNexus Mods, with 80.8 million downloads at the time of writing. This puts it in the site’s top ten, despite only fully launching last August, alongside the likes ofFallout 3andCyberpunk 2077.
While Baldur’s Gate 3 was being modded during its early access period, it only broke into the top ten for most downloads after its full release. It’s already beaten everyDragon Agegame for the honour, and with the game very much still enjoying its post-launch success, this number is likely to rise even further, perhaps even surpassingThe Witcher 3, which is just ahead in ninth place.

Unsurprisingly, first and second place are Skyrim Special Edition, and the originalSkyrimrespectively.
Half of the top ten is made up ofBethesdagames (more than half if we include games published by Bethesda), so it’s impressive to see Baldur’s Gate 3 break onto the list so early. It’s beating Bethesda’s latest game,Starfield, by more than doubling its download count - although again, early access would have helped. Even if it didn’t find its true success until 2023, it did get a three-year headstart.
So, what’s making the game so popular on Nexus Mods? The success appears to be due in large part to a lot of the improvements made to character customisation, with fan-made hairstyles being particularly sought after. Then, there are fixes and improvements made to other features in the game, especially the UI. One of the most popular mods right now isMore Reactive Companions, which makes your team more likely to pipe up and voice their thoughts on whatever you’re getting up to.
However, sometimes the most useful mods make some of the smallest changes. Over the weekend we covered a mod thatmakes dyeing items much faster and lets you dye multiple items at once. This is a lifesaver, fast-tracking one of the most tedious features in the game right now. Fingers crossed, Baldur’s Gate 3 developerLarian Studioswill implement its own, official improvement for dyeing, so us lot playing on console can make the most of it too.
