As terrifying asPhasmophobiacan be, the developers are kind enough tomake sure you’re well-equippedbefore you risk your life. Each item in Phasmophobia can help you either repel the ghost and keep you safe, or they can help you discover pieces of evidence to determine the ghost type.

One of these tools is the spirit box, a radio that lets you hear the ghost speak. You’ll only gain answers from the ghosts that have the spirit box as an evidence type, and you’ll also need to ask a question for the ghost to answer. There are lots of things you’re able to ask a ghost. It all depends on what you want to know.

What Is The Spirit Box?

The spirit box is one of the main pieces of equipment you can purchase from the store in Phasmophobia. Designed like a radio, the spirit box is used to hear and communicate with ghosts around you, but only if they want you to. This piece of equipment is mainly used as a piece of evidence that can help you determine the ghost type.

That’s not all it’s good for, though. The spirit box can be much more than just an evidence type; it can tell you a lot about a ghost’s movement, as well as its general behaviour. Since many ghosts interact and behave in particular ways, the answers from the spirit box can give you hints about how much they roam or how dangerous they might be. The Ascension update also brought new tiered levels to the equipment. Levelling up will grant you access to the higher tiers, which have a larger radius, faster responses, and clearer messages.

How To Use The Spirit Box

Using the spirit box requires you to simply turn on the device and start chatting away. It’s important to make sure that your mic can be picked up in the game, otherwise the spirit box won’t pick up your questions. If you already have a general idea about where the ghost may be roaming, then using the spirit box in that location will get you the best results.

The response from the ghost will be heard in broken sentences from the spirit box, though higher tiers will give you clearer answers. If you’re unable to use the game’s sound, or simply like to have it lowered to avoid scares, then using the lights on the spirit box can help you identify a response.

For the best results, make sure to use the spirit box while alone in a room with all the lights turned off. Certain ghosts will only respond to one person and turning the lights off will increase ghost activity.

Each spirit box will have a light or icon that tells you whether your microphone is being picked up by the game. They also have lights or icons that will indicate whether a response has been given or not. Usually, a red light means no response and a white light means you’ve had a response.

Questions About Location

Questions about the location can help you know whether a ghost is roaming around the building or whether it’s confined to a single room. Here are some questions the ghost will respond to:

Asking questions about the location of the ghost can be useful at the beginning of the game to narrow down its exact location. Usually, the box will only work in the ghost’s current room, so gaining an answer will narrow down your search by a significant amount.

You’ll get answers that sound slightly threatening, like ‘behind you’ or ‘close’, but then you’ll at least know the ghost is in that room. The ghost could also be ‘far’ or ‘away’, so you may have gained an answer from a ghost who is roaming away from their room.

Questions About Age

While asking questions about age can be interesting and will at least give a response, it’s important to note that they won’t determine much about the ghost’s behaviour, and sometimes it won’t match what the ghost looks like.

Questions about age can be phrased in a few different ways. Using ‘young’ and ‘old’ will work perfectly fine here, but using specific numbers won’t get a response. The most common answers you’ll get from these questions will mention whether they’re ‘elderly’ or ‘young’.

Questions About Behaviour

Questions about the behaviour of the ghost can tell you a lot about its behaviour. Angrier responses can hint that it might be a more aggressive ghost, like a demon or a revenant. Be sure to keep an ear out for what these responses are telling you.

Since each case can bring a new ghost with a new behaviour, these questions can help identify how active the ghost will be. Some may be incredibly talkative and will make them easier to find, while others may not answer often and will avoid interactions.

Many of the responses gained here will include ‘hurt’ or ‘kill’, which is probably normal for most haunting spirits. Since the ghost will be in the room with you when answering your questions, be careful not to become theunfortunate target of a hunt.
