Summary
In Black Salt Games’Dredge, the protagonist is not a person but a boat. While the initial gameplay allows you to customize the tools your ship used,including giving yourself cursed abilities, an update has taken customization a step further. Now, you can paint your hull and roof, as well as choose whether or not to have bunting. Most importantly, you can fly a flag to embody what your ship is all about.
With seven new flags in the game, six of them scattered about the map, you have a number of options to choose from. So what are the best options? That all depends on the aesthetic you’re going for. Here are the all the flags available, ranked.
7Anchor Flag
The centerpiece of this flag is the white anchor, set against an orange background and flanked by two red triangles. The background does add some dynamism, but the anchor itself is the image that has the least to do with the gameplay.
One of three flags in this update with a warm color palette, using red, this flag matches the orange paint job most closely. It’s a flag for those who would like to settle down at the end of all of this, even if they know that’s impossible.
6Fish Flag
A basic flag featuring the creature that makes the game possible: the humble fish. While maybe not the flashiest flag in the game, this blue and white flag is nonetheless a classy addition that gets straight to the point. This flag is for the realists.
Since the game is classified under horror, this flag misses the opportunity to feature fish bones instead of the whole fish. But that may be a matter of personal taste, so it still ranks higher than the lowest entry.
5Hook Flag
The only flag with the unique triangle shape, the hook flag features a stylized white hook and arrow. This flag is for those who are in it for the fishing, first and foremost. The shape of it also matches the bunting you may put on your ship, and it makes you wish the other flags were a little more creative in their shapes, too.
The bright colors of this flag will match those who want to decorate their ships with bright colors, so you can stand out in the darkness of night even when your lights fail you.
4Sea Serpent Flag
A cool red flag featuring a monstrous sea serpent. In a game all about monsters, this flag is a monster lover’s pride flag. Alternatively, it can also be a flag that indicates the ship has been destroyed multiple times by the massive creatures lurking in the depths.
Another red flag, this flag can match the red paint job. If the fish flag was too simple, this is the flag for you.
3Ouroboros Flag
Representing the struggle at the heart of this game, this flag has a background of two thin dark green stripes around a light green stripe. Displayed in the center is a white sea serpent-looking creature about to swallow its own tail.
Even without the context of the game, the ouroboros is a cool symbol which can fit into a number of aesthetics. The flag can also match either of the greens you can paint your ship. An amusing, and maybe bittersweet, statement for those who havebeaten this game multiple times, in different ways.
2Pirate Flag
A classic! It’s hard to go wrong with the ol' Jolly Roger. In any game featuring boats, piracy is sure to pop up, even if it’s just a passing thought. While there’s no pirate ability in the game, you can still dress your ship up like you want one. As a black flag, it also matches every color you can paint your ship.
Also, since all of these flags are salvaged from the depth, this flag implies that some of those wrecks out there might have been pirate ships before crashing. That alone makes this flag number two on the list.
1Eye Flag
In a game where (almost) the entire draw is the spooky atmosphere, the eye flag is easily the best flag. With a design reminiscent of the eyes that appear to haunt your ship in the dead of night, this flag will stare back into the abyss. A bright red flag, it pairs well with both the red and black paint jobs.
It’s also the only flag that’s distressed, adding another level aesthetically for anyone who wants to make their ship look likethere are horrors being processed onboard.All in all, it’s a creepy flag that should appeal to fans of this creepy game.
