Alan Wake 2’s New Game Plus mode (also known as the Final Draft update) makes a few changes to the game’s story, including adding a much happier ending for Alan and Saga.

Ever since Alan Wake 2 launched,Remedy has been teasing that its New Game Plus mode, titled The Final Draft, would add in some surprises for fans and change up the story somewhat, including giving the game a new ending. That update finally released yesterday and some speedy fans, like Manugames92, have already beaten it and revealed that the Final Draft conclusion is a much happier ending for everyone involved.Spoilers for the new update and Alan Wake 2’s ending below.

The original ending of Alan Wake 2sees Alan having just been shot in the head and seemingly still trapped in the Dark Place, but with a new understanding of how he might get out. Meanwhile, after defeating Alan and banishing the Dark Presence from Casey, Saga tries to get into contact with her daughter, Logan, only for the game to cut to black before finding out if she’s alive and well.

Although it was a fitting end considering how dark Alan Wake 2 is, it was a pretty depressing final note to end on, something that The Final Draft version of the game does away with entirely. After completing New Game Plus, we get to see an extended version of that cutscene, which confirms that Logan is alive and well, as she answers the phone and says that she had a nightmare.

Surprisingly, the new ending also confirms that Alan didn’t die when Saga shot him in the head with the Bullet of Light. Instead, he rises from his chair and says that he’s managed to escape the Dark Place, thanking his wife Alice for helping him get out. Alan then calls himself “the master of many worlds”, which seems like a hint at where his character could be going in any future game in the series.

Alan Wake previously appeared in Control’s AWE expansion, so it’s possible that we end up seeing or hearing about him at some point in Control 2.

The only person who the ending is worse for is Alice, who appears to still be trapped in the Dark Place by the end of the game. It’s possible that her rescue will be a part of Alan Wake 2’s planned expansions but, for now, she remains there. At least Alan and Saga are in a much happier place this time around.
